Artist Statement
One evening in October 2020 as I was preparing dinner, I cut off the white ends of green onions and placed them in a small Ball jar with some water to replant later. The roots were very long because my husband, Seth, and I had used them at least twice since we planted our garden in March. The roots made the onions stand in the jar and it reminded me of jellyfish. I immediately daydreamed of the warm waters in the Florida Keys where we spent a relaxing New Year with family and friends. It also made me think of the garden that Seth and I loved and cared for. During quarantine, Seth discovered the pleasures of cooking and we enjoyed finding and testing new recipes. Seeing those little onions that would be replanted and grow again brought me so much joy. They represented this challenging year. My family and the green onions were parallels, changing and growing.

The pandemic has forced many of us to slow down, and for good reason. It has been heartbreaking, tragic, and bittersweet. 2020 taught me to listen, make time for self-care, be content with what I have, and lean and breathe into challenges and opportunities with an open heart and mind. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions with inspiring and uplifting stories of community and a united, global cry that Black Lives Matter. It is about love over hate, being vulnerable, and welcoming change. There has been a lot of discussion about the “new normal”. I prefer the “New Present”. It invites close observation of this one precious life and the beautiful world we share.

Color Of Change Mission Statement
Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization.

We help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. As a national online force driven by 7 million members, we move decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America.

Our campaigns and initiatives win changes that matter. By designing strategies powerful enough to fight racism and injustice—in politics and culture, in the work place and the economy, in criminal justice and community life, and wherever they exist—we are changing both the written and unwritten rules of society. We mobilize our members to end practices and systems that unfairly hold Black people back, and champion solutions that move us all forward.

Until justice is real (colorofchange.org).
