Calligraphy and Logo Design

When I was approached by Nashville-based metal band RIFFT to design their logo, I was ecstatic. I really enjoy heavy music, and I’m a long-time admirer of the innovative design styles that many of the best bands in the genre use to visually represent their sound. I knew that the RIFFT logo had to be distinctive and reflective of the name’s dual meaning: a guitar riff and a rift in space and time.

I used a texture technique with Sumi ink that I learned from Yukimi Annand to create the expressive letters. I then handed it off to my partner in crime, G. Seth West, to design the layout for the album art. The cover photo was taken by Trey Suiter, one of two guitarists in RIFFT. The band “loved” the final results!
